Something crossed my mind...
Fern is a control freak, in a way. :P The bitterness and hatred she holds is her way of regaining influence over a situation she couldn't stop. She usually has a back-up plan, and that's what keeps her calm and collected when things go wrong. When she was injured and her mother was killed, she could do nothing about it so she came to blame and hate all humans. And if something else that she has no back-up plan for happens--like Graham or Mark getting killed--she'd probably be like this:
Fern: "WHAT?! Who did it?! I want their head on a pike for target practice!!"
